SurfPaints Interview Series
We hand-select individuals from our community to hear the stories behind their designs.

Hi Shari, Welcome to the SurfPaints Interview Series!

1. Can you provide us with a brief background on your journey as an artist and tell us what you're currently working on in the world of art?
During the COVID lockdown, my husband and I got creative. We started by sprucing up things around the house—painting statues, walls, even rocks! We stumbled upon acrylic flow painting on YouTube and fell in love with its unpredictability. Then, I discovered resin art and it took off from there. Now, I'm into different art forms like wall decor, serving pieces, and experimenting with geode art using Surfpaints pens. Additionally, I craft charcuterie boards and trays. And, of course, we're thoroughly enjoying our poolside mural!

2. We'd love to know how you came across SurfPaints. What aspects of SurfPaints do you find most appealing or inspiring for your art?
I discovered Surfpaints online, bought a set, and got hooked. The Starter Kit completed my colors, perfect for detailed mural sections. Their ease of use beats brushes, offering vibrant designs and great coverage. The dual nibs add versatility. The artist community's posts keep inspiring me with fresh ideas.

3. Every artist encounters unique challenges in their projects. Can you share specific obstacles you've faced in your art projects and how SurfPaints have proven to be a valuable resource in overcoming these challenges?
My main art challenge is steering away from stress over realistic pieces and focusing on my strengths in abstracts. Surfpaints, especially for sea life, are a game-changer. They make outlining and filling in effortless, ideal for intricate details in Geode and other abstract works. Compared to my previous paints, they're more reliable, offering a smoother creative experience.
4. Your mural projects are all fascinating and have captured our attention. Could you share with us your most favorite project and how you came up with the idea?
Our mural, inspired by Seattle airport's, came to life during COVID renovations of my childhood home. This cherished space, built by my father and grandfather, holds a special view and a pool. My husband and I feel fortunate to live here, especially considering my father's remarkable story—he married his high school sweetheart at 92 after losing their spouses. They graciously handed us the house during the pandemic, allowing for much-needed updates. The mural concept emerged during renovations, sparked by a teal wall yearning for an aquarium vibe. Surfpaints entered the scene perfectly, inspiring an evolving mural that keeps me engaged amid other projects. Your product and artist community influenced the ocean tray with kissing fish, a delightful endeavor.

5. As an experienced artist, do you have any valuable tips or techniques that you could share with others interested in creating resin projects with SurfPaints?
Resin, a love/hate journey for me. Adore its unique appearance, but working with it is messy and challenging. If intrigued, research brands, safety, and techniques—it's worth it. Surfpaints elevate resin projects with vibrant colours and layering techniques for dynamic and intriguing details.

Bonus Question:
What message or piece of advice would you like to impart to other artists at all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, who are passionate about expressing themselves through this medium?
My best advice for those intrigued by working with resin is to initially explore other artists' works and various products, then enjoy the experimentation process! I've encountered numerous failures and sometimes had to abandon or restart a project. As you advance, incorporating Surfpaints into your work can elevate your art to another thrilling level.
