Hi Lee, Welcome to the Surfpaints Interview Series!
1. Can you provide us with a brief background on your journey as an artist and tell us what you're currently working on in the world of art?
In 1994, after many years of believing I couldn't draw or paint, I enrolled in a VCE art class at the local secondary college. In my first class, I drew a patch of grass and thought it looked quite beautiful. I attended this class for two years, and by the end, I received a high distinction and gained entry into a fine art course at university. However, due to family commitments, I couldn't attend university. Although I didn't engage much in art thereafter, I picked it up again in 2019, painting dinosaurs for my grandchildren.
In 2023, I converted our spare room into an art studio and have been painting almost every day since. I give my paintings as gifts to friends and family, and they love them. I plan to continue painting in my spare time and hope to change my work schedule to three days a week, dedicating more time to painting in my studio. Ultimately, I aspire to sell my work and accept commissions.
2. We'd love to know how you came across Surfpaints. What aspects of Surfpaints do you find most appealing or inspiring for your art?
I first discovered SurfPaints when I came across them on Facebook. I was drawn to the brightness of their colours and their opaqueness. Having frequently used another brand of paint pens, I was intrigued to see how SurfPaints compared. In my experience, while I still appreciate the other brand, SurfPaints surpass them, yielding much better results.
3. Every artist faces unique challenges in their projects. Could you share specific challenges you've encountered in your art projects and how SurfPaints have been a helpful resource in overcoming these challenges?
It’s paint; you can paint over things you don’t like, spray with fixative, and paint something new. Those new to art/painting can often feel overwhelmed by the quest to “get it right,” but art can be very enjoyable if you simply let go and play with the process of creating.
4. Your painting projects are all unique and have captured our attention. Could you share with us your most favourite project and how you came up with the idea?
My new suitcase (pale pink color) got battered and scuffed on my first trip using it. I used SurfPaints to give it a facelift by painting a few flowers on it. I can’t tell you how many positive comments I received at the airport.
Bonus Question:
As an artist, what message or piece of advice would you like to impart to other artists at all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, who are passionate about expressing themselves through this medium?

Use the supplies you have at first to get started and gain some confidence, then treat yourself to some beautiful new supplies like SurfPaints.
