SurfPaints Interview Series

We hand-select individuals from our community to hear the stories behind their designs.

Hi Flick, Welcome to the SurfPaints Interview Series!

1. Can you provide us with a brief background on your journey as an artist and tell us what you're currently working on in the world of art?
Art is something I've always been interested in, but I never had time to fit it into my busy schedule until now. This year, I've been fortunate enough to delve into some art projects that satisfy my need to be creative. My preferred art form revolves around mixed media whimsical ladies' faces. I enjoy experimenting with various mediums like collage, acrylic, watercolor, paint pens, pencils—practically anything! However, when I stumbled upon an advertisement for surf paints, I was captivated by their rich colors and couldn't resist trying them out. You can explore examples of my style on the Mixed Media Art by Flick page on Facebook.

2. We'd love to know how you came across SurfPaints. What aspects of SurfPaints do you find most appealing or inspiring for your art?
I saw your ads on Facebook and fell in love with the vibrancy of the metallic range and how easy they are to use. Although I don't surf—I've been meaning to give it a try—the paints are perfect for projects that need to withstand different weather conditions. You'll find a picture of an old concrete planter that I've upcycled using Surfpaints.

3. Every artist faces unique challenges in their projects. Could you share specific challenges you've encountered in your art projects and how SurfPaints have been a helpful resource in overcoming these challenges?
The challenges I've encountered include creative blocks and determining the best ways to utilize various mediums. Surfpaints have offered tutorials on YouTube that provide both inspiration and guidance, which I've found incredibly helpful.

4. Your painting projects have captured our attention. Could you share with us your most favorite project and how you came up with the idea?
My favorite project using Surfpaints thus far has been my planter pot. Since it's a plant pot, I decided on a garden theme. I enjoy a touch of fantasy, so I thought a fantasy garden would be perfect for this. I began by painting the pot black with a spray can, then started doodling. If I made a mistake, I simply covered it with a black Surfpaints pen and continued! Once finished, I sealed the pot using a spray sealant designed for acrylic paints.

5. As an experienced artist, do you have any valuable tips or techniques that you could share with others interested in creating projects with SurfPaints?
I invested in online art lessons to learn the intricacies of creating art using mixed media. Understanding how to effectively combine different mediums is crucial to avoid ending up with a chaotic mess!

Bonus Question:
What message or piece of advice would you like to impart to other artists at all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, who are passionate about expressing themselves through this medium?
Every piece of art goes through an 'ugly stage'. Keep going, keep going, keep going. The finished product will be worth your effort. Remember, art is subjective. Some people absolutely love my work, while others have outright told me it's utter crap. If it brings me joy and makes some people happy, that's what matters most to me!
